Masked knifeman threatens staff at Shrewsbury shop

An armed robber threatened staff with a knife at a Shrewsbury supermarket.

The man, wearing a balaclava terrified staff at the Mid Counties Co-op in Mount Pleasant in the town on Monday morning.

Several police cars responded to 999 calls from the store.

No-one was hurt in the incident.

A spokesperson for West Mercia police said: "At just after 11.40am Monday police were called to the Co-operative Shop, in Mount Pleasant Road, in Shrewsbury.

"A man wearing a balaclava entered the shop and threatened members of staff with a knife and demanded money and cigarettes."

Police said that shortly after the incident a 22-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of robbery and taken into custody.

The store was sealed off for several hours as forensic investigation of the scene took place.
