Troy Hevingham, who pleaded guilty to charges of robbery and possessing a knife in a pubic place, had gone into the shop on Madeley Court Way at 7.45pm on October 25 last year.

The 46-year-old, who has 15 previous convictions for a total of 45 offences, had initially approached the counter and asked the female staff member if she was alone.

Shrewsbury Crown Court was told that the woman replied by saying there were other members of staff present, before Hevingham told her he wanted to buy a sandwich.

After pointing at ingredients he moved towards the woman, who was behind the till, produced the knife and demanded she opened the cash register.

The woman and her colleague both retreated to the back of the shop and called the police.

Judge Anthony Lowe was shown CCTV of Hevingham trying to open the till using the knife, before he used the blade to cut the cords on two charity boxes and fled with them tucked into his jacket.

The court heard details of victim statements from both staff members, who spoke of the long-lasting impact the robbery had on them.
