Russell Corvers, 42, was sentenced at Shrewsbury Crown Court for four offences – all relating to an incident on New Year's Day in Shrewsbury.

He admitted charges of theft, assault occasioning actual bodily harm, assaulting an emergency worker, and taking a conveyance without consent.

Philip Beardwell, prosecuting, said that the background to the offending had seen the defendant taking his mother's bank card in November, and withdrawing £150 to spend on drugs.

The prosecutor said that Corvers had been severely impacted by a family tragedy, which had triggered the use of crack cocaine.

On New Year's Day Corvers had been at his mother's home in Shrewsbury, where he was staying, and the pair were watching a film on TV.

Mr Beardwell said that "without warning" Corvers had stood up and started demanding her bank card.

The court was told he then punched her, grabbed her by the throat, and hit her in the face.
