The fraud is when motorists deliberately crash into another vehicle, or cause a vehicle to hit their car, so they can claim on the person's insurance – often for illegitimate injury.

West Mercia Police say not only have they received 971 fraud reports in relation to Crash for Cash across the force's policing region from June to July, but that it equated in a total loss in fraud of £3,938,624.

The news comes a week after the force warned motorists in Shropshire about an attempted 'crash for cash' collision reported on the A41 in Newport.

Police said warned motorists to be on the lookout for a black Seat Leon, that was involved in a collision with a car, causing damage to its rear.

West Mercia Police said more information on Crash for Cash can be found at the City og London Police website: http://cityoflondon.police.uk/crashforcash
