Construction of the new £66 million Bournville College at Longbridge has reached an important milestone, with the completion of the six-storey frame.

The college is scheduled to be completed by September, in time for a new intake of students from all over the West Midlands.

The 4.2-acre campus site, at the junction of Bristol Road South and Longbridge Lane, will consolidate Bournville's three existing campuses at a single site, with capacity for more than 15,000 students.

The 250,000 sq ft main building will house education facilities including a learning resource centre, business school, construction workshop and leisure and sport facilities.

Bill Oliver, chief executive of St Modwen, which is developing the site, said: "The topping-out of a development marks a great milestone and is always cause for celebration, especially with a project as important to the local area as this."

The construction of the college represents the first phase of the redevelopment of the former MG Rover plant at Longbridge and has been designed by the Birmingham office of Broadway Malyan.

The 18-month building project started in November 2009.
