Two primary schools are facing closure after council chiefs backed plans to open two new 'super schools'.

Powys County Council's cabinet yesterday backed moves to start informal consultation to close Carno Primary School, near Newtown, and Llandinam Primary School, near Llanidloes, next year.

The cabinet also backed plans to create 'all-through' schools for four to 18-year-olds in Machynlleth and Llanidloes as part of a modernisation project to cut costs and tackle surplus places.

The proposal would see Llandinam's 38 pupils move to Caersws Primary School, and Carno's 44 pupils move to Llanbrynmair Primary School.

But the plans have been criticised by parents, who say the move is 'purely based on cost'.

The move is the latest in a series of decisions by Powys County Council as it reviews its provision of primary and secondary education.
