Princess Anne will take up the role at the university, at Edgmond, near Newport, on November 22.

The Chancellor is a ceremonial figurehead and may take part in conferring degrees at graduations as well as acting as an ambassador for the institution.

The Princess Royal will be formally installed at a event taking place at St Peter's Church, Edgmond.

Dr David Llewellyn, vice-chancellor, said: "It is a great honour for the university that Her Royal Highness has accepted this position.

"We are in the process of making the necessary arrangements for the ceremony in collaboration with members of the local community, including the university chaplaincy at St Peter's Church." Princess Anne has been an Honorary Fellow of Harper Adams since 2006 and during her last visit, in November 2012, a new residential block for students, was named The Princess Royal Hall in her honour.

Tradition

Next month's event will continue a tradition of royal visits to Harper Adams University which have included The Queen, The Queen Mother, Princess Margaret and The Prince of Wales.
