An area at Burton Borough School in Newport was closed amid reports of dirty material seeping from the drain.

The school said contractors building an extension to the school had become aware of a blocked drain somewhere between the sports hall and the end of Audley Avenue which had led to a smell.

The changing rooms were closed to students earlier this week while the problem was resolved, the school said.

The sports hall is also used by several activity groups including a five-a-side football session for youngsters during the evenings.

One parent claimed there was waste up to three inches deep in the area .

A spokeswoman for Burton Borough said: "The changing rooms were closed to students for a short period of time while the problem was rectified.

"We have received no complaints from any of the lettings that take place after school.

"There is a dedicated cleaner for the sports hall who would liaise with the site team in the event of any problems."
