Youngsters at Market Drayton Junior School have taken part in a concert to mark the school's 100th birthday with dancing, singing and fireworks all playing a part.

The school has taken on a range of projects to mark the milestone, including an exhibition of photographs and memorabilia from various points throughout the school's history.

Parents and friends of the school were asked to contribute any memories they had as well as photos, old school certificates and projects to go on display as part of the exhibition.

On Friday the celebrations came together with the concert, finishing with a fireworks display.

While building work first began in 1914, the doors of the school first opened on March 8 1915 when 208 children joined.

It was originally named Little Drayton Council School. The pupils' ages ranged from seven to 13.

Sally Brayne, deputy headteacher, said: "The celebrations went really well and we all had a great day.

"We have been preparing for the celebrations for a while now and did lots of planning.

"We asked members of the local community for any memorabilia they may have and also asked Market Drayton museum and the Shropshire archives.

"The children have been brilliant and have done a lot of investigation.

"Each year group took a past subject and looked more in-depth into it."

She added: "On Friday morning we had a big sharing assembly where the children showed all the research they had done.

"Then we had an open morning where children could look round the museum we had created in one of the class rooms.

"On Friday night the school put on a concert. There were children from the infant and junior schools singing in their choirs. It was really good and of a very high quality.

"Everyone did so well.

"The evening culminated in a firework display, which was great. It was a lovely way to finish off a special day.

"We will continue to mark the school's centenary throughout the year."
