The university, in Edgmond, near Newport, is shortlisted for university of the year and the best university in the UK for job prospects.

Harper Adams specialises in agriculture and land-based studies and in 2010/11 had a graduate employment rate of more than 98 per cent.

It is also in the running for student support, clubs and societies, facilities, accommodation and course awards.

Over the past year, more than 20,000 students across the UK have submitted reviews that are used to compile the Whatuni student rankings.

Andy Jefferies, from the Harper Adams student services team, said: "This is fantastic news – it is great to see Harper Adams students giving such great feedback about the university.

"National recognition of the outstanding education, support, social life and facilities offered here is richly deserved.

Harper Adams students have the best of everything – top notch resources, the best lecturers and an amazing social life – then they graduate and go on to do great things."

Dr David Llewellyn, vice-chancellor, said: "It is fantastic to know that our students think so highly of the work we are doing to give them a top-quality education and a well-rounded experience of university life."

This year, 111 universities are being considered for a student choice award and 39 universities received a nomination.

The official results will be announced on the April 23 at a ceremony in London.

Whatuni was set up to help students find universities and courses using a special search engine on the site and a comparison tool.

Simon Emmett, managing director Whatuni.com, added: "For prospective students, being able to hear first-hand about the quality of education and realistic expectations for life at uni is an invaluable resource when making a decision to pursue degree-level studies.

"Our hope is that the student university rankings contribute to the research and preparation required for each student to choose the right uni for them."
