Chris Scott, principal and chief executive of Telford College of Arts and Technology, said the launch of new courses at Southwater from Monday would increase opportunities for learners aspiring to higher education.

Event management, business and health and social care courses will be run from the top floor of the Southwater One building as part of an arrangement with the University of Wolverhampton. The university's own courses will start at the new university centre in the autumn.

Mr Scott said the partnership was hugely exciting. He said: "This is a great opportunity which enhances the fact that Telford College caters not just for learners on level two or three courses, but also those aspiring on to higher education. It hammers home the message that we deliver a wide spectrum of higher education courses."

Teresa Parker, senior head of school at Telford College, said: "From next week we will be running our higher national diploma (HND) in event management, foundation degree in art and higher national certificate (HNC) in business at Southwater. These are existing courses which are moving all or part of their provision to Southwater to take advantage of the university facilities.

"We will have further courses running there from September including CIPD, with a higher level being delivered by the university, as well as part of the foundation degree in health and social care, and some introductory tasters to higher education. These are just part of the Level 4 and 5 courses which are delivered by Telford College and includes a variety of HNC, HND, foundation degree and professional qualifications."

Jackie Dunne, University of Wolverhampton deputy vice-chancellor, said: "The University of Wolverhampton is delighted that teaching at University Centre Telford, at Southwater One, will begin on April 20.

"This will be by our partners, Telford College of Arts and Technology, and the classes will be for existing TCAT students."

An open day will be held at the centre on May 16 from 10am until 4pm.
