Teachers on strike in Telford college pay dispute
Teachers at a college were today taking strike action in a bid to get 12 months pay protection.
At the moment, staff at New College in Wellington have a guarantee that the first six months of their wages will remain the same.
However, members of the National Union of Teachers staged a one-day protest, less than a month after their previous strike, in an attempt to get this raised to 12 months.
It comes following the restructuring of curriculum managers posts in September 2014.
Last year nine teachers and managers at the college in King Street were made redundant from their positions and some other members of staff took pays cuts of 20 per cent.
However, no pay cuts or redundancies would be made in relation to the issue of pay protection, Chloe Wright, spokesman for the college, confirmed yesterday.
Fiona O'Brien, principal at New College Telford, said: "Despite the strike, I feel confident that as a college we are working together towards solutions that work for all our teaching and support staff. Discussions are very much welcomed and we will remain transparent and approachable on any matters that unions wish to raise.
I'm very proud of the way that the staff have adapted and gone the extra mile to support those students who will be affected.
As always, our priority is and will continue to be the delivery of an outstanding experience for our students."
