In just two years the university, based in Newport, has jumped 38 places to number 46 in the Complete University Guide's league table.

The leap makes Harper Adams the highest-rated post-1992 university in the 2017 table.

University vice-chancellor Dr David Llewellyn said: "This is the second year in a row that we have made substantial gains in the Complete University Guide. It confirms our position as the UK's leading specialist agri-food institution, taking the top position this year for post-'92 universities and adding to our recent WhatUni Student Choice Award of University of the Year.

"I am delighted that the hard work of our staff and students has been recognised in this way."

Harper Adams University is also among the top 10 universities for agriculture and related studies and top 20 for food science.

Simon Emmett, chief executive officer of the Hotcourses Group, which acquired TheCompleteUniversityGuide.co.uk in October 2015, said: "The CUG league tables follow close on the heels of the very different WhatUni Student Choice Awards.

"Both exist to help students make the right university choices."

Today's news is the latest boost to the university.

It was revealed earlier this month that it had been named the best university to study at following a national poll of students, who were asked to judge on their overall experience.

Comedian Jimmy Carr crowned Harper Adams with the title at the Whatuni Student Choice Awards.

The university also won in the job prospects and student support categories.

Further success came with silver awards for accommodation, clubs and societies and the student union, as well as getting bronze for courses and lecturers and facilities.
