Watch: Telford pupils congratulated on their GCSE results . . . by Olly Murs
Pupils at Madeley Academy in Telford found their hearts skipping a beat when singer and TV presenter Olly Murs took time out to congratulate them for their exam results.
They received the surprise video from the Troublemaker musician last week. In the video, Olly congratulated students for their GCSE results, which were released last month.
He said: "I just want to say well done to everyone at Madeley Academy for your amazing exam results – great stuff. Keep up the hard work."
The message also used sections of music from his hit Stevie Knows, from 2014 album Never Been Better, with segments of the music video included too.
Assistant headteacher Jonathan Boyle said: "I've got a contact who asked him to do it. Olly is a good bloke and didn't hesitate.
"We waited while we showed it to the children, and made sure everybody at the school managed to see it – often to gasps.
"Then I asked the headteacher if it would be okay to get it onto Facebook – it's a positive use of social media.
"It hasn't just impressed the students, but a lot of the staff are fans as well. Some have been overwhelmed. They've got tickets to go see him next year."
Mr Boyle said that Olly was a good role model for the children.
He said: "He's current, he's contemporary and he has good morals. He singled us out and took time out his day – we were so grateful. Little things mean so much.
"We've all been working hard. The success story of Madeley Academy has included long-term hard graft by everybody concerned, from parents to children and teachers.
"I've got a couple of Olly's albums by default, because I have children. I'm a great fan of the X-Factor and have admired him through that.
"It's always good to see young talent do well. He's like a lot of our children. He started humbly and went on to make a great success of himself – that's what we're trying to do here.
"We want to give them the opportunity to make their lives better. It was great to see them congratulated in such a wonderful way. We couldn't have asked for more."
