The state-funded school will cater for up to 20 vulnerable children aged seven to 17 who have suffered trauma in their lives.

The school, which will be sited near to The Mews, will have two main classrooms, an art room, science room and design/food technology room. There will also be a reception/admin office, head teacher's office, medical room and outdoor space.

The school will initially be registered with Ofsted for 12 children, but the scheme has been designed to be able to cater for 20 in the future.

Five letters were submitted in objection to the proposal, which raised concerns about traffic and highway safety.

The plans, which were approved by Shropshire Council, were put forward by Cambian Group PLC – one of the largest providers of specialist behavioural health services for children and adults in the UK.

A statement on behalf of the applicant said: "Cambian currently operates three specialist care homes for children who have suffered trauma within the Shropshire hub. One is located adjacent to the application site at The Mews, and the other homes are located in Shrewsbury."

"Cambian has also identified a need for two further homes within the hub. This demonstrates the very urgent local need for an education facility in the Shropshire hub.

"The Government is very clear on its position regarding new state-funded schools – to grant planning permission where possible."

The statement adds: "The school will follow the national curriculum and there will be a range of lessons from core subjects such as English, maths and science to art/design, food technology, humanities and music."
