Former Shrewsbury student wows film critics across the world
A former student from Shrewsbury is wowing film audiences and critics across the globe with a film he wrote and directed.
Rob Savage, who left Shrewsbury Sixth Form College now in 2010, is already forging a successful career in film and TV.
He spent six months creating ‘Dawn of the Deaf’ an apocalyptic horror short, which was made with the help of some of the deaf community in London.
Rob, 24, who grew up in Shrewsbury and previously attended Meole Brace School, has been living and working in London for the past five years as a film, commercials and television director.
He said: “Our aim was to create a genre film that would connect deaf and hearing audiences in an engaging, thrilling way.
“As opposed to re-treading the same narratives usually seen when dealing with disability, we wanted to create a tense story in which the characters' disability becomes their ultimate advantage over the hearing population.”
The film has picked up a host of awards and nominations. It recently won the Melies D'argent Award at the Oscar Qualifying Sitges Film Festival.
The film was also chosen to play in competition at the Sundance Film, the biggest film festival in the world, in January.
There were almost 10,000 entries to the festival and only 60 films were picked to be shown.
“We were the only fiction short in the entire country to be selected. It was an absolutely fantastic feeling to be recognised in this way at such an early stage in my career.
“We've played at almost 100 film festivals around the world and won dozens of prizes. Many of these festivals qualify us for the BAFTAs and OSCARs.
