Parents call for Telford primary school crossing to 'save lives'

An online petition has launched calling for a zebra crossing outside an academy, with parents claiming the school run has become 'dangerous'.

The petition, set up by Laura Moss, of Dawley, Telford, calls for the road safety measure to be installed outside Dawley C of E Primary Academy.

She says students have had near misses with traffic and a child was recently involved in an accident. The petition has also been supported by a parent governor of the school who says both adults and children face a 'challenging' walk there.

The petition, at change.org, states: "Dawley C of E Academy needs a zebra crossing as the school run has proven to be dangerous after students face near hits and recently a child was ran over. Luckily the child has recovered and has no lasting injuries.

"I urge anyone who feels the same as me to sign this petition. Something needs to be done before we face a fatality."

It has already been signed by more than 40 people and will be delivered to Telford & Wrekin Council. Comments of support for the petition are also flooding in online.

Parent governor Kerrie Gray wrote: " Both adults and children face a challenging walk to school each day in terms of road safety. Near misses recently have highlighted the dangers."

Simon Gray, of Dawley, is a parent and former pupil of the school.

He said: "I feel something needs to be done. In spite of the recent incidents it's a busy area with the school, park and houses and would benefit from some form of road safety such as a pedestrian crossing. Years ago a lollipop lady was always about."

Stuart Archer, of Dawley, also signed the petition. He wrote: "The roads are too busy. And with it being the summer, kids will just run straight across the road and on to the park. It will save lives and hopefully give our children some road safety. Good petition. Well done for sorting it."

Lisa Dyson, of Dawley, added: "My children attend this school as I did. We need some sort of road safety there."

Telford & Wrekin Council spokesman Russell Griffin said: "We are aware of some concerns relating to traffic arrangements outside the school. We will carry out an investigation into the feasibility of installing either a zebra crossing or some other method of traffic calming."
