Sean Smith started at Telford College of Arts and Technology after being excluded from several schools.

But the 17-year- old, from Sutton Hill, is now thriving on a Positive Pathways programme at TCAT, and has his sights set on a career in the catering industry.

During his first year at TCAT, Sean has already won a student of the month award and passed his level one Maths and Personal Social Development (PSD) qualifications.

He said: “I have lived in various parts of Telford all of my life. I did not enjoy school, and did not achieve what I could have. I now wish I had achieved or done well in mainstream school.

“I signed up for Positive Pathways to prove myself and prepare for a course next year. I like to explore different foods - especially curries - and I am aiming to do a catering course when I finish this year.”

His tutor, Tania Long, said: “Most learners who are referred to our Positive Pathways course have been disengaged from education, employment or training, and some have social, educational or behavioural issues and barriers to overcome.

“Prior to TCAT, Sean had been excluded from various schools in the area and joined Positive Pathways in September 2016 with the view of making positive changes for his future  including education, lifestyle choices and social life.

“He has made excellent progress, demonstrating dedication and commitment. Sean received a student of the month award, and is arranging a work placement in the kitchens at Coalport Youth Hostel.”

Sean has also helped out with charity events, including a fundraising sale and coffee afternoon.

Ms Long added: “Positive Pathways is delivered with flexibility in a relaxed learning environment.

"Our personalised learning and support approach is an essential strategy in helping these young people to move forward and succeed both academically and personally.”

Sean said: “Maths and English are important in catering, as you need to read and understand recipes, be able to weigh ingredients and price meals correctly.

“I would highly recommend Positive Pathways, as it helps you get into college onto a full-time course.”
