Jane Carroll, chairwoman of Bishop's Castle Primary School governors, said that all the applications have been made for the school to join the Bishop Anthony Educational Trust, which is linked to the Diocese of Hereford, and the school should formally join next year.

She said: "We are going through the process, we've now made all the applications.

"The date when we actually join will be in April next year.

"There's a meeting this month to give some sort of approval.

"We've been through the consultation process with parents, they're all in favour or what we're doing, they're all supportive.

"Basically we think it gives the school more academic freedom if we're part of an academy. The school will have more freedom to do things the way it wants to.

"Also we were looking forward to forming closer links with bigger primary schools such as ones that are already part of the Bishop Anthony Educational Trust and schools that are thinking of joining it."

A number of academies in Shropshire are already part of the Bishop Anthony Educational Trust, including Ludlow CE School, Ludlow Junior School, Ludlow Infant and Nursery School, and Morville C of E Primary School.
