Christmas trees upcycled into fish houses
This winter's Christmas trees are being transformed into special 'fish houses' on a river in mid Wales.
Children from Llanfechain Primary School and members of the Cain Valley River Group have upcycle the fir trees, tying them into bundles to create ‘river revetment’ protection for the River Cain.
Dewi Morris and Andy Green volunteers from the Cain Valley River Group helped the children two tie two trees together. In June they will revisit the school tied two trees together to make some bundles. In June Dewi and Andy will visit the school again and help the children secure them to a nearby riverbank of the River Cain to slow the flow, with support from the Severn Rivers Trust.
Mr Morris said the Christmas tree branches will also create ideal conditions for fish to spawn and for the young fry to shelter from predators.
“This is a great way for pupils to understand the important role that they can have to look after their environment in their everyday lives.”
Miss Rhoanne Clarke: Acting head-teacher at Llanfechain Primary School said: “Studying rivers and helping their local river Cain is a great way for our pupils to learn all about their environment.”
