Telford school open despite Storm Freya roof damage
Two Telford secondary schools is open for lessons today despite being left with a damaged roof after Storm Freya.
Pupils arrived at Haberdashers' Abraham Darby on Tuesday morning to discover that part of the roof of a building was left hanging off.
The school took to social media to tell pupils to enter the school via the leisure centre back gates, with the school continuing to hold lessons.
The post said: "Whilst significant building repairs are taking place all staff and pupils must enter the Academy via the Leisure Centre back gates and through the playground.
"Please continue to enter this way until further notice."
One parent said: "They should close the school. I'm concerned about the safety of the building. Part of the roof is hanging off near the office at the front of the premises and it seems to have been damaged by the high winds.
"I dropped my daughter off at the gate at 8.15 and it didn't look safe to me. I expected them to shut the school."
The Haberdashers' Adams' Federation Trust, which runs the school has been contacted for comment.
The windy weather is also being blamed for wall panels becoming detached from the side of the sports hall at Telford Langley Academy, in Duce Drive, Dawley.
The school's business manager Steve Jones said: "Some side panels at the back of the gym came off, but it's not affecting the pupils or our activities. We're waiting for a company to come in to secure them into place."
