Teachers deliver laptops amid lockdown
Staff at a school have joined forces with community agencies to supply struggling families in the area with food and laptops to aid online learning during the current lockdown.
Teachers and support workers at Millbrook Primary School and Nursery, in Telford, have been working hard to make sure their pupils have all their requirements as the pandemic continues.
The effort has seen new headteacher Kirsty Parkes arrange for staff to hand deliver learning packs weekly to the home of every child who is currently unable to attend the site, in Grainger Drive, Leegomery.
The initiative has resulted in 60 laptops being distributed to 10 and 11 year-old pupils who are due to move to secondary schools in the autumn.
The equipment will remain at the school so that future Year Six pupils can also benefit from it.
The devices were purchased with the help of funding from Hadley and Leegomery Parish Council.
While an additional 48 laptops were provided by the Government under a national programme.
Last month the school presented 300 households with hampers containing food and toiletries in partnership with Community Fareshare, Morrisons and Asda to help spread some festive cheer.
The school is also running a forest school project for Year Five pupils to learn in an outdoor setting.
The staff take the nine and 10 year-olds on nature walks to encourage outdoor teaching and learning which helps them with coping strategies by being outside in the fresh air and away from a desk especially.
The school is also marking Children’s Mental Health Week.
“As a school we have felt a sense of responsibility to support those who have been affected by this terrible pandemic within our community,” Mrs Parkes said.
