High Sheriff of Shropshire makes final visit to Telford College

Dean Harris, who attended the campus of Telford College with her consort Mark, had planned to visit earlier in her year, but had to postpone due to Covid-19 restrictions.

The visit was her last as acting High Sheriff, as she will be replaced by Tony Morris-Eyton, who will take up the role for 12 months until April 2022.

Ms Harris said: “I was mightily impressed by the state-of-the-art facilities – there is a lot of college packed into the space.

“We had a tour of the whole campus and met staff and students from engineering, catering, sports, the VR suite, 7th Form and art.

“With more than 2,000 full time students, plus part-time and apprentices, and 500 staff, it was good to hear not just about academic achievements but also safeguarding, staff and student welfare, students having a voice, links to employers, and being work ready.”

The High Sheriff was shown round the college by principal and chief executive Graham Guest, and Susan Alder, director of student services and marketing.

She said she was impressed by the special educational needs provision at the college, and the safeguarding structure which was in place.

“It’s easy to see why students feel valued; there’s obviously lots of fantastic opportunities and a very good atmosphere,” she said.

The High Sheriff said it was also good to hear about "the exciting plans and vision" for Telford College’s role in the new Station Quarter, in the heart of the town centre.
