Kya Rogers, aged 10, of Hadley Learning Community in Telford has taken delivery of the book Peculiar Pets

Kya Rogers, aged 10, of Hadley Learning Community, in Telford, entered the Peculiar Pets Voices of the Future competition organised by website Young Writers after deciding she wanted to get her work in print.

She researched and planned the effort by herself and came up with a poem titled ‘The Queens Pet Dinosaur’ about a purple dinosaur with pink spots belonging to the Queen, and his extraordinary eating habits.

Her entry for the competition was among those selected by Young Writers for publication in a new compilation book titled Peculiar Pets and she has been sent a keepsake copy.

Dad Tim Rogers, of Hadley, says: "Kya is always writing something. Stories are what she pens the most. She also does illustrations. She creates and draws the characters and then writes a story to go along with it.

"She's hoping to enter more writing competitions in the the future."

More than 2,000 entries were sent in for the competition and her achievement in getting her poem chosen for the book was praised during an assembly at the Waterloo Road school.

"She was happy to be back at school and to be out and about seeing her friends. She's now looking forward our family holiday in Wales later this year," he adds.
