Singer Beth's visit hits the right note at Telford school
She's rubbed shoulders with pop stars like The Saturdays and Lil Wayne – but that didn't stop Beth Sherburn educating youngsters about how to stay safe online.
The Midlands singer performed at Madeley Academy in Telford as part of a campaign to help tackle cyber bullying in schools across Shropshire.
It was the second time the singer has visited the school – with teachers saying she engaged pupils with the difficult issue.
The 24-year-old pop star, from Sedgley near Wolverhampton, was given a £250,000 record deal after she was spotted while working on the perfume counter of a shop.
Now she is using her new-found fame to visit schools in the area, both to heighten her own profile and to speak to youngsters about potential dangers online.
She also paid a visit to Concord College Lower School in Shrewsbury as part of the campaign.
Jonathan Boyle, deputy headteacher at Madeley Academy, said: "As an academy we have a very positive attitude towards giving our students the best possible information we can to make sure they are fully informed about the issues of cyber bullying and internet safety.
"Beth Sherburn was able to appear for a cohort of students - who are not of a dissimilar age - and engage in a different way.
"She came last year and I had no hesitation in booking her again. Not only were the students fully engaged with the music, they listened to every word she said, it was quite amazing. I know the staff in the audience learned a great deal, and I am sure the students did too."
Beth caught the caught the attention of music producer, John McLaughlin, back in December 2012.
She was working at Debenhams at nearby Merry Hill Shopping Centre, when Mr McLaughlin overheard her singing along to Michael Bublé while she polished the shelves at the perfume counter.
Since then Beth's career has taken off with her having to split her time between the UK and America - as well as having the opportunity to support artists such as The Saturdays, Conor Maynard, Katy B and Duke Dumont on tour.
