Pupils show teamwork to build model Iron Bridge in hostel activity day
Schoolchildren have been busy building their very own Iron Bridge completely out of wood.
The year five pupils from Coalbrookdale and Ironbridge Church of England Primary School, took part in a day of activities at a youth hostel on Monday.
The spent their day building a replica of the World Heritage site as well as taking part in candle dipping. The day was organised by YHA Coalbrookdale as a way of testing out new activities they will offer when schoolchildren visit the centre.
Penny Ellis, manager at the hostel, said the activities went down "really well" with the 32 pupils.
She said: "The whole day went really well and all the pupils seemed to have a really good time. It was a great way for us to test out our new activities and it was a great for new members of staff to learn about how we run activities here.
We had them taking part in a couple of different activities.
"The first thing they did was candle dipping, where they made different colours and they really enjoyed that.
"Then we had them make a mock-up of the Iron Bridge out of wood. This was a great way for them to work together.
"They have to work together to figure out where all the different pieces of wood go and as the pieces are bigger than them they had to work in pairs to carry in. Once they knew where the pieces go they have to put it all together and bolt it. Then once it was completed they were able to walk across the 15ft bridge, and it looked great."
YHA Coalbrookdale will now use these activities when schools from across the country.
