Hundreds of pounds were raised at Thomas Telford School's multi-cultural celebration evening. The money raised – about £360 – will go to help Parkinson's support groups across Telford and Wrekin.

With food stalls aplenty and bhangra dancing dominating the centre of the hall, there was plenty for pupils to see and experience. Students of all ages came out to take part in dance classes and test the treats.

Katharina Tozer, the school's head of religious studies, said: "The idea is to increase the students' moral, cultural and spiritual awareness, and to promote diversity.

"Wherever our students are going, whatever their pathway, they're going to go to university and into the workplace, so events like these will prepare them for the wider world. It increases community cohesion and creates an awareness of other cultures in a diverse world."

Some of the food was made by classes from Year 8, who were taking a GCSE induction in cooking.

Taj Uddin, from Mahim Takeaway in Bayston Hill, near Shrewsbury, led the classes, teaching the pupils how to make samosas, spring rolls, chicken curry with rice and sweet pastries. Katharina said: "It was fantastic, and really well attended.

"It was a great atmosphere – students from all year groups took part, even the Year 11s who aren't timetabled at the minute.

"It was such a success that we'd love to do it again, and maybe even grow it. The students enjoyed the evening and there's already been a lot of great feedback."

Pupils were given the chance to take part in bhangra dancing, and were taught the basics during the event, which was held on Tuesday. Money was raised from the sale of food and henna tattoos.

The evening was held as part of the school's 25th anniversary.
