Joe Chambers and Andy Crawford, as seen on CBeebies The Rhyme Rocket keep Joe Wright, 4 and Penny Gray, 5 , pupils at Mereside Primary School, entertained.

Children at Mereside Church of England Primary School, in Springfield, warmly welcomed First Officer Ditty and Professor Poet.

The characters are otherwise known as Joe Chambers and Andy Crawford, who present the CBeebies television program The Rhyme Rocket.

They used rhyme, poetry, songs and plenty of silliness to show the children that English can be entertaining.

Pupil Dexter Wigley Wakefield, seven, said: “They were so funny. We helped them make up rhymes, silly songs and dances to fuel their rocket.”

Teacher Rachel Harper added: “It was a fantastic a morning. The children really enjoyed the performance and it reinforced their understanding of rhyme.”

The Rhyme Rocket started in 2012 and has been a hit with young children ever since. It is a children's poetry series and the crew of the Rhyme Rocket have one mission: to collect poems from around the universe, one rhyme at a time.
