The race at the Chetwynd Deer Park, near Newport, on Wednesday would have been the last in a series of three cross country runs organised by the Telford & Wrekin School Sports Partnership (SSP).
In a statement, the SSP announced that Severn Trent Water staff were carrying out emergency repairs to a burst main at the Edgmond Road, B5062.
The statement cited four-way traffic lights "that would cause traffic chaos and severe delays to the event".
It continued: "This situation is beyond our control, please accept our apologies."
