Firefighters were called to a Kidderminster hotel after a burned-out motor sparked a blaze during the early hours of today.

Staff at the Mercure Hotel raised the alarm at 1.30am today and officers discovered a fire in the swimming pool plant room.

The room is in a leisure centre building separate to the main hotel and no guests or staff had to be evacuated while the blaze was put out.

Two firefighters wearing breathing equipment went into the plant room and a carbon dioxide extinguisher and jet were used to bring the fire under control.

Investigations revealed the fire had been sparked by a burned-out motor in the plant room.

Damage was restricted to the motor and the room itself had suffered smoke damage.

Crew commander Steve Perks, from Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service, said: "The main hotel building was unaffected."

Two fire crews from Kidderminster were called to the scene along with the Environmental Protection Unit from Stourport and an Incident Response Unit from Droitwich.
