The man, who has not yet been named, died at the scene of the accident in Ironbridge Road, Jackfield.

Police said he was driving a green Range Rover estate which collided with a lamp post and a tree at about 2.50am yesterday.

Three other people were cut free from the wreckage of the car and taken to hospital with serious injuries.

Two men, one with serious head and pelvic injuries and the other with serious arm injuries, were taken to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham.

A woman in her 20s was taken to University Hospital of North Staffordshire with a serious arm injury.

The accident happened on a sharp bend on the road which runs from Ironbridge to Broseley.

Inspector Emma Wright, of West Mercia Police, said: "Police are appealing for any witnesses to contact us on the non-emergency number 101, quoting reference 110S020912."

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman added: "Sadly, it quickly became apparent to crews that nothing could be done to save the driver of the vehicle and he was confirmed dead at the scene."

In a separate accident yesterday a car hit the central reservation on the westbound carriageway of the A5 near Preston Island, at about 6.30pm.

A police spokeswoman said that no-one was injured.
