The blaze happened in a block of flats in Stapleton Road, Meole Brace in Shrewsbury.

The family, including three teenagers, were outside when fire crews arrived. No one was injured.

Fire chiefs said the fire broke out in one of the bedrooms at about 12.30pm on Saturday.

Steve Purslow, for Shropshire Fire and Rescue, said: "Luckily the family had got themselves out by the time we arrived.

"We are still investigating the cause and we probably won't know what started it until the early part of next week. But it was not started deliberately, it was an accidental fire."

Two fire crews were sent to tackle the blaze.

Four firefighters wearing breathing apparatus entered the flat and spent around 20 minutes battling the flames.
