The door and part of the roof were damaged in the blaze at Quik Fix Auto Repair in Leonard Street, Oakengates, and discarded tyres which also caught light sent thick black smoke billowing into the air.

A wooden sliding door at the front of the 20m x 10m workshop caught fire at about 12.30pm, but the blaze was put out by firefighters from Telford Central in about 20 minutes.

The site is also a base for private hire taxis, which were moved away from the garage while firefighters put out the flames.

Neighbour Lindy Jones said she was worried about the possibility that gas canisters might have been stored in the garage and that there could have been and explosion.

She said: "The first I knew about it was when the cars were being moved. I know they have Calor gas and high pressure tanks there but I don't actually know what happened.

"There was billowing black smoke. I just moved my car down the road in case anything happened.

"One of the taxi drivers was panicking as he moved his car."

Two fire crews used a mains reel and hose reel and two breathing apparatus to put out the fire.
