Fire chiefs believe the blaze started when Christmas decorations lying close to a woodburner caught alight.
The fire at Stokewood Farm close to Aldon, near Craven Arms, took hold in the living room just before the owner returned home shortly after 3pm yesterday.
The man was alerted by smoke alarms going off and opened his living room door to be hit by a 'wall of smoke'.
The room was severely damaged and much of the house was smoke damaged.
Station manager Guy Williams, for Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service, said: "The fire was almost certainly an accident and it was very important that the owner had fitted smoke alarms and that they were working."
