Formal identification of the man is yet to take place but he is believed to be Victor Narburgh, who was in his 70s, and lived at the bungalow in Alveley, near Bridgnorth, which was destroyed in the blaze.

Police and fire crews were called to the home in Birds Green shortly before 4pm on Wednesday. Investigations are continuing into the cause of the fire, which is being treated as 'unexplained'. Residents in Alveley said widower Mr Narburgh was well-known in the village, having run the garage on the main road with his brother Nobby for many years.

And firefighters and members of the community fire safety department visited more than 300 properties in the Alveley area yesterday to give out fire prevention advice. Martin Timmis, head of prevention for Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service, said: "I would appeal to every householder to have smoke alarms which work installed in their properties."

Detective Inspector Mark Bellamy has appealed for anyone who was in the area when the fire started between about 3pm and 3.30pm and who may have information which could help the investigation to get in touch on 101.

Formal identification is expected to take place in the coming days with an inquest opened by the Shropshire Coroner John Ellery soon after.
