Teenage girl killed in house fire near Ellesmere
A teenage girl has died following a fire in the bedroom of a Shropshire home. The youngster, who has not been named by police, was declared dead at the scene.
The fire in a house in Bagley Marsh, near Ellesmere, on Saturday night was confined to the bedroom and two adults who were in the property at the time were not hurt.
Today the house, which is owned by Walsall Council, had two cars parked outside but no one was in.
The council uses the home for children in its care.
The cause of the blaze is not yet known.
Firefighters were called at about 11.30pm on Saturday and paramedics fought to revive the youngster but declared the teenager dead at the scene about an hour later.
One woman who lives nearby, but did not want to be named, said it was a great shock.
She said: "We didn't know what it was, it is such a shame to hear that a teenager died.
"It was about 11.45pm and we were woken up by sirens. There was an ambulance, police and fire engines."
Richard Ewels, spokesman for West Mercia Police, said: "Paramedics delivered first aid but were unable to revive the teenager and she was declared dead at the scene at 12.25am.
"The death is being treated as unexplained but no-one else is thought to be involved."
