The three raiders, all wearing balaclavas, targeted the Co-operative store, in Bagley Drive, Wellington, between 5.45am and 6.15am. They threatened two members of staff with a weapon similar to a Taser, which discharges an electric current.

The weapon was used briefly on a male member of staff before the attackers tied up both employees and stole the keys to the safe.

The men stole everything inside the safe before fleeing from the store through the back door. Police said at this stage it was not clear what had been stolen.

Detective Inspector Billy Scott said: "This appears to be a carefully planned robbery because of the tactics used and the time of day it occurred and the two staff members have been left extremely shaken by it. We are currently in the process of taking detailed statements from them.

"However, the three men have initially been described as being white, aged in their late 20s or early 30s, as wearing dark clothing and as possibly having Wolverhampton accents.

"The scene of the robbery has been cordoned off and forensic officers are currently examining the shop for possible evidence that could help us identify the robbers.

"We are also carrying out house-to-house inquiries in the area and I would like to take this opportunity to appeal to anyone who may have information about this robbery to come forward."

Shocked staff declined to comment.
