The fire happened on the B4361, Orleton, near Ludlow at about 11.15am yesterday.
Firefighters say the fire started underneath the engine area of the vehicle which was towing a cattle trailer at the time.
Retained Support Officer Jason Norgrove said: "The driver realised there were flames underneath the engine area of the 4x4.
"He made a good decision to separate the trailer from the vehicle so the trailer didn't catch fire as well.
"The vehicle was about 80 per cent alight when we got there. It took about 10 minutes to get it under control."
Crews from Ludlow and Leominster attended the scene and used breathing apparatus and hose reel jets to tackle the fire.
