Motorcyclist airlifted after A49 crash near Shrewsbury

A motorcyclist has been airlifted to hospital with serious injuries following a two-vehicle crash which has closed a busy stretch of the A49 near Shrewsbury.

The smash happened just after 1pm this afternoon on the stretch of A49 between Bayston Hill and Stapleton between a motorcycle and a red Citroen car.

The male driver of the bike has been flown to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham by Midlands Air Ambulance after suffering serious head, abdominal and leg injuries.

An elderly female was taken to hospital with chest injuries accompanied by her husband, who was also in the car.

Up to six police cars, two ambulances and two paramedic officers have attended the scene and the main road has been closed in both directions.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokeswoman said: "On arrival at the scene crews found a car with significant damage and a motorcycle in a hedgerow. The motorcyclist, a 49 year old man, had come off his bike and was lying on the floor.

"He had sustained serious head and abdominal injuries together with a serious fracture to his leg.

"Once stabilised and packaged, the man was airlifted to Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham, the regional trauma centre, for further emergency treatment.

"The driver and passenger of the car, an elderly husband and wife, were assessed by crews at the scene. The woman suffered chest injuries from her seatbelt and was taken to Royal Shrewsbury Hospital as a precaution."
