The Pride Hill Shopping Centre is cordoned off while fire crews investigate and staff and shoppers were outside the mall for an hour.
Staff returned to their shops by midday, with members of the public making their way in five minutes later.
The alarm was caused by an overheating light fitting.
Two fire engines were on site and scene tape ran from the entrance of the centre, across Pride Hill to Boots.
