A silver Chevrolet rolled over and ended up on the embankment of the A5 in West Felton, near Oswestry, after colliding with a black Toyota.

The accident caused long delays for motorists, who faced diversions and queues of at least two miles. Several people suffered slight injuries, including an elderly lady who was treated for head and neck injuries.

She was flown to the North Staffordshire University Hospital by Wales Air Ambulance as a precaution because of her age.

The accident happened at 3.40pm, hitting rush hour traffic. It did not open again until 10pm.

Inspector Jane Fitzpatrick, from West Mercia Police, said: "There were some injuries but they are not thought to be life threatening.

"A Chevrolet rolled over after being in collision with a Toyota Avensis and at least one person was airlifted to hospital as a precaution. The road did not re-open until 10pm and that is probably because the fire service had to do a lot of cutting to get people out of the vehicle so there was a lot of debris.

"Three people were taken to Royal Shrewsbury Hospital and one had minor injuries and was discharged.

"The other two were older women who were in the Toyota and were kept it overnight as a precaution, mainly because of their age."

The A5 was closed in both directions at Queens Head. Motorists were diverted off the A5 at West Felton junction, rejoining the road at the Queens Head junction.

Drivers using the route faced delays of more than an hour on their journey.
