The worker, who has not been named, was behind Welshpool Magistrates Court when he rose above the buildings along Severn Street at about 9.30am yesterday where he remained for about an hour.

He was clearing leaves from the gutter at the court building, Mansion House, when the cherry picker began rising on its own.

Passers-by were seen taking pictures of the worker, who was unharmed, and he was back on the ground by 10.45am.

Gary Brannigan, a passer-by who saw the worker stuck in the air, said: "It caused quite a stir in the town, especially as it was pouring with rain.

"People were taking photographs on their mobile phones and pointing and he seemed to be on his mobile phone for quite some time sorting his release.

"Then the fire brigade turned up, lowered him and he was soon away."
