Elderly man trapped after car overturns in Shrewsbury smash
A man has been arrested on suspicion of drink-driving after a crash in Shropshire which left an elderly man trapped upside down in his car.
A 39-year-old man was taken into custody at Shrewsbury Police Station after the collision in Ellesmere Road, Shrewsbury.
The man, who had been driving a Vauxhall Astra, was bailed after the crash at 9pm last night.
The elderly man trapped upside down in a Honda Jazz was released by fire and ambulance crews after about half an hour.
Another elderly man who had been travelling in the same car had managed to get out but both were taken to hospital as a precaution.
A Vauxhall Corsa thought to have been parked at the time of the collision was also damaged.
Police closed the road from the Coton Hill junction to Herongate while the man was rescued.
Two ambulances and the trauma doctor went to the scene.
West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman Murray MacGregor said: "On arrival, ambulance crews found three cars had been damaged.
"One car was upside down and another was on the pavement. A third car had minor damage to the front offside headlight and bumper.
"Two elderly men were in the upside down car. One had managed to get out himself. The second was still inside.
"The man inside was removed by ambulance staff, with the assistance of firefighters, on a spinal board.
"He was assessed by the doctor at the scene and was found to have suffered no significant injuries but was taken to Royal Shrewsbury Hospital as a precaution.
"The other elderly man was taken to the same hospital, again as a precaution.
"No-one in the other car was injured. It is believed one car was parked at the time of the crash."
Richard Ewels, spokesman for West Mercia Police said: "We had a call to Ellesmere Road in Shrewsbury to a collision involving three cars, one of which was parked at the time.
"A Honda Jazz carrying two men was on its roof. One of these men had to be released by the emergency services.
"The parked car which was also involved in the collision was a Vauxhall Corsa.
"A 39-year-old male driver of a Vauxhall Astra was arrested on suspicion of drink-driving.
"He was taken into custody at Shrewsbury Police Station and has since been bailed while inquiries continue."
