Police officers said the boy had started in his boat close to the Ironbridge Rowing Club in Dale End Park but it is believed that he lost his oars and began floating down-stream towards the Iron Bridge itself.

Fire Crews from Tweedale and Wellington, as well as a Water Rescue First Responder were called to the River Severn close to the Wharfage just after 5pm and pulled the boy and his boat from the water using rope safety lines and ladders just before 5.30pm.

The lines were thrown out to the boy to pull him to the river bank.

Inspector James Ashton from West Mercia Police, said: "He was in a boat and I believe he hadn't got any oars.

"He was seen by the ambulance service and is fine."
