The man managed to dash out of the house to safety but suffered burns to his back and hands.

Neighbours looked on in shock as smoke bellowed from the rented mid-terraced property and the two adjacent houses in Broadway, Shifnal.

Two women living in the neighbouring homes have been forced to live in temporary accommodation or with family following the blaze.

The fire destroyed the building's bedroom, attic, kitchen and roof, while the other two terrace houses suffered smoke damaged.

Fire crews from Telford and Tweedale spent three hours battling to bring the flames under control.

At the height of the incident there were 20 firefighters in action battling the blaze, which broke out at 7am yesterday.

Broadway was also cordoned off for several hours while the fire was dealt with. The road was reopened at about 1pm.

One elderly resident, who has lived in Shifnal all his life, said he had never seen anything like it. He said: "I was woken up by the noise at 7am, opened my bedroom curtains and saw all the smoke. I saw one of the women standing outside but I don't really know the others because it's all rented accommodation."

It is believed the fire started in the first floor bedroom."
