Pilot scrambles free as plane ends up on roof at Halfpenny Green airport

A light aircraft ended up on its roof after a bad landing at Halfpenny Green Airport near Wolverhampton today.

The airport sent their own fire crew immediately to the crash site but the male pilot had managed to get himself out

The Midland Air Ambulance, West Midlands Ambulance Service and firefighters from Wellington were also sent to the airport at about 10.30am this morning but were stood down.

The pilot had got into difficult when landing his Cessna 152 training plane.

He was checked over by a doctor at the scene but did not required further treament.

Alistair McKinnon, the airport's operations manager, said: "The pilot was landing the standard training plane at the time.

"It eventually came in to rest in an inverted position on the runway.

"We immediately sent out our own fire safety team, which we have based here at the airport.

The pilot managed to get free before emergency services arrived

"Everything was back up to normal soon after."

Chris Kowlaik, spokesman for West Midlands Ambulance Service, said: "There were no serious injuries and the pilot had managed to get himself out of the plane.

"It was more like a bad landing than a crash."
