The driver, a 21-year-old man, suffered serious leg and suspected back injuries in the crash involving his green Vauxhall Corsa and a maroon Freelander on the B4371 at Hilltop, near Much Wenlock.

He had to be cut free from the car by firefighters and was taken to hospital for emergency treatment.

An 18-year-old woman travelling in the Corsa also suffered minor injuries in the collision, which happened at about 12.40pm, and was also taken to hospital.

A man and woman in the 4x4 suffered bumps and bruises and needed no further treatment.

The road was closed for more than four hours after the accident and a fuel spillage was cleared by officials from Highways England. It was re-opened at about 4.45pm.

John Hawker, spokesman for West Midlands Ambulance spokesman, said: "Medics treated the man while he was trapped in the car and he was given pain relief.

"Considering the damage to the car, the occupants are fortunate not to have suffered more serious injuries."
