The driver came across what he thought was a dead or injured man lying in the road.

He stopped and put his hazard lights on to warn others then dialled 999.

The driver then approached the motionless body to see if he could help and had the shock of his life when the man woke up from what had been a drunken 'nap'.

The Good Samaritan stopped at the scene on a road in Cleobury Mortimer in the early hours of Saturday.

A spokesman for the South Shropshire safer neighbourhood team at West Mercia Police said the motorist had been driving home from work.

"He was shocked to see a body in the middle of the road," the spokesman said.

"Thinking the worst, he called for the police and ambulance and stopped to check the body. He put the hazard warning lights on in his car and approached the man. He could not see any movement and updated the police.

"Once alongside the male he noted there was movement and that he was breathing. The man then awoke, causing even greater shock.

"It transpired that he was so intoxicated after a night out that he thought the middle of the road was a sensible place to take a nap.

"An officer attended the scene and confirmed that, luckily, the man had not sustained any injuries from his midnight sleep in the road. He was taken to a place of safety and left to sleep it off."

The spokesman said that suitable words of advice were passed onto the man, once he was sober enough to take note of them.
