Damage at Minh's Restaurant in Bradford Street was minimal, but thick black smoke billowed out on to the street.

Three fire crews were sent to the scene yesterday afternoon. The road was closed off, although cars were driving through the side road near Patons Ford dealership.

Aaron Holloway, Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service watch manager, said: "There was a fire in the kitchen which spread to the extraction unit.

"There was smoke in the restaurant, but most came out of the extraction unit.

"Employees were doing some preparation work and they were all out by the time we got here.

"Nobody was hurt. There's damage inside to the extraction unit. There's some very light smoke damage."

"It's an important reminder not to leave cooking things unattended, in commercial properties and at home."

Jordan Dyal, from Escape Hair Design, across the road from Minh's, said: "We saw big clouds of smoke out on the road and then the fire engines turned up.

"They were there for quite a while. The whole street was shut off, traffic was turning around in the road to go the other way."
