Scaffolding has gone up at the house on the A41 at Shakeford, between Newport and Market Drayton, which was left severely damaged by the crash.

The property remained cordoned off yesterday and debris from the vehicle could be seen on the road.

Contractors were expected at the property last night to carry out work to demolish part of the property to enable the road, which has been shut since the accident on Tuesday night, to reopen.

The lorry left the A41 and crashed into the house at about 11pm, and police believe a second lorry was involved, but did not stop.

The house was being lovingly restored by a young couple who are believed to be from Cannock.

Emergency services say the couple are devastated at what has happened.

Neighbours have spoken of their shock at the crash and said they heard a "bang" when it happened.

They have also called for work to be done to make the road safer due to the number of accidents that have happened on the A41 in the past.

The driver of the lorry, a man in his 50s, sustained leg injuries, but nobody was in the house at the time of the crash.

Fire crews quickly cordoned the area off for safety.

The road was closed all day on Wednesday while experts worked to remove the HGV and ensure the house was safe.

Speaking on Wednesday, police said the road was due to be closed for at least another two days and that existing diversions will remain in place.

Three fire crews including the incident support unit and the rescue tender were sent from Hodnet, Market Drayton and Wellington.

Crews used small gear, a short extension ladder, lighting and a thermal imaging camera.

John Lutner, chairman of Hinstock Parish Council, said the A41 was a busy road often used by lorries and speeding traffic is an issue.

The main diversion route from the north is directing traffic at Tern Hill island onto the A53 towards Hodnet, then onto the A442 into the Telford and Wrekin area, then onto the B5062 at Crudgington towards Newport, before re-joining the A41.

The diversion from the south is in reverse and starts in Telford and Wrekin.

Anyone with information about the crash is urged to call police on 101.
